Peter, a writer in his fifties, sits at home in Turku waiting for his wife Zebra. She is also in her fifties, successful at the university, and pregnant; she is almost always out, at work or with friends, and has no room for listlessness. Peter runs into his two teenage children now and then in the street. In the summer of 1988, as a young man in Nykarleby, he first saw his parents as adults in a complicated marriage: every morning his father, a gardener, picked a rose for his mother and left it floating in a bowl, proof of a love he could not put into words. Peter has never managed a rose in a bowl, and he wonders what he has done with his life and with others’.
