Alfonz Trnovský, a general practitioner in the small town of Brežany, has spent his whole life trying to look radiant, happy and content, but the truth is different: he does not want to hear his own conscience. Around him the twentieth century rolls on unstoppably, with four political regimes, the Jewish question, the show trials and the secret police, and with the many women he loves. The story is told by his son Adam, who comes back to say goodbye to the house he has never managed to break away from. Covering Slovakia's history from the 1930s to the 1990s, the novel is about a father and his son and about the ties between the past and memory.
