A child leans at a window, and beside him on the sill sits a cat, the first of his life. Here his awareness begins. The narrator, unmistakably the author himself, returns to his childhood in Vienna during the war and the years after it: the family, the city, what the adults said and what they kept silent, their hopes and fears, the exceptional and the everyday. He is often told he dreams too much. The cats that have kept him company all his life, and the windows from which he has watched the world, frame this account of a boyhood in the bombed and rebuilt city.
