In the late summer of 1955 Cambodia, newly free of France, is heading for its first open election. Sar, who will one day be called Pol Pot, is deep in the campaign: officially the opposition leader's secretary, secretly a militant working towards a communist uprising. He is betrothed to Somaly, granddaughter of royalty and the newly crowned Miss Cambodge, but the marriage depends on an opposition victory and a government post for him. Then Sary, the gifted, ruthless and impatient deputy premier on the other side, also falls for Somaly. Within weeks this rivalry over one woman becomes entangled with the struggle for power, and decisions made by the three of them push their country onto a path that leads to disaster.
