Twentieth-century Sweden was shaped by workers' politics and by religious revival. This novel takes up the second through Lewi Pethrus, who founded the Swedish Pentecostal church, perhaps the most influential religious figure the country has produced, divisive while he lived and largely forgotten now. It follows him from a labourer's son who hoped to write proletarian literature to a shrewd religious leader who even helped found what became the Christian Democrats. Central is his bond with the poet Sven Lidman, first his strongest supporter, finally his fiercest foe. Mixing biography, memoir and ideas, it asks why radical movements turn into stiff hierarchies.
