The story of three friends from Levice, a town in southern Slovakia whose people never move yet are shaken by every turn of history: Peter feels Hungarian, Ján Slovak, and Gabriel does not deny his Jewish origins. On 1 September 1938 they meet at the town's swimming pool and decide to compete for the beautiful Mária. Their contest goes on for the next thirty years, and their individual lives become frail boats in the storm of history: the Munich Agreement, the Vienna Award, the Second World War, the anti-Jewish laws, German occupation and the arrival of Soviet troops, post-war expulsions, the communist coup of February 1948, the show trials of the 1950s, the attempt at reform and the Soviet invasion of August 1968. It is a novel about love, as far as a higher power allowed it.
