After his rabies triumph, Louis Pasteur sends young followers abroad. One, Swiss-born Alexandre Yersin, later French, goes to Indochina and stays most of his life, far from Parisian squabbles. Endlessly curious, he studies diseases as well as maps, stars and weather, founds the hill town of Dalat, makes his home on the coast, and identifies the plague germ during the 1894 epidemic.
