Het onverwachte antwoord

Godfried H. is seen only through the eyes of his female companions, each taking her turn. Esther sketches him; Clara, a geneticist and his deepest love, tells him how orchids are pollinated; Anna, his wife, a psychoanalyst, believes he is unfaithful; Marina, once his student, is told his views on Rilke and writing; Sybille, his lover, is sure she sleeps with God; a shadowy S. completes the series. Each account grows more fervent, and the reader begins to doubt whether these women are really separate people.
