A novel of the life of Kim Jeong-ho, who called himself Gosanja and drew Joseon's most accurate maps, a man of whom history records almost nothing. As a boy he can read the lie of hills and rivers at a glance. His father leads a relief force against the Hong Gyeong-rae rebellion with an official map as his only guide, and the whole troop is found dead because the map was wrong. Fearing a false charge of treason, the ten-year-old flees by night and roams the land as a carpenter. He spends half a century making a map to give the land back to its people, helped by young scholars and travelling peddlers, until others plot to steal his work.
