Turin, carnival 1926. Moraldo, a student from the provinces in town for his exams, discovers he has taken the wrong suitcase. Struggling over philosophy books and drawing caricatures, he admires from afar Piero, a young man his age who has already founded magazines and a publishing house and lucidly fights the country's slide towards dictatorship. Moraldo spies on him and wants to meet him, but every attempt fails. Meanwhile he finds his lost suitcase and falls for Carlotta, a free-spirited street photographer about to leave for Paris, where Piero too has gone, leaving behind his wife Ada and their newborn son.
