Pietro is a solitary, rather surly city boy. His mother works at a family clinic on the outskirts of Milan; his father, a chemist, is brooding and charming and comes home every evening full of anger. His parents met, fell in love and even married in the mountains, and the flat horizon of Milan fills them with nostalgia. When they discover the village of Grana at the foot of Monte Rosa, Pietro begins to spend every summer there. Waiting for him is Bruno, a boy his age with hemp-blond hair who tends the cows instead of being on holiday, and their summers of exploration begin, while Pietro also starts walking the mountains with his father.
