On 18 February 1948 the Rumeli Unarmed Brigade, led by Giorgos Gousias, sets out to take reserves for the Democratic Army from Vracha to Macedonia. Thirteen hundred recruits from the Agrafa and Thessaly, inexperienced, untrained, without clothing, food or weapons, cross the plain of Farsala, fall at Lake Karla, pass the Pineios, reach the slopes of Olympus, climb the peaks of the Pierian mountains and escape into Macedonia, while the government army hunts them without mercy and their losses are crushing. This novel in linked stories follows the thirty-seven days of their tormenting march.
