The common idea of boxing is two people climbing into a ring and hitting each other until one gives up. These stories set out to show that it is talent, technique and hard work instead, and that the same is true of literature. Their heroes are at once macho and sentimental, coarse and tender, awkward and devoted, and they dance in the ring of life to show that a person stays human with or without gloves.
