The first volume of a cycle of prose is set in Palić, a spa town beyond Hungary's border, among its station master, cemetery keeper, pharmacist and chimney sweep, pub philosophers, spa-town drifters and other luckless figures. The hero, T. Olivér, is sent by his wife to the local pharmacy, and his roundabout errand takes him through the town and along the border strip, until a misunderstood gesture gets him taken to the border guard. To his surprise the officers search his document cases, crammed with his stories, for incriminating evidence. He is jailed, then sent to a psychiatric ward, where he befriends a cigar-smoking professor from Pest who may be a doctor or a patient, and on whose desk he finds his own document case. Soon the two are reading from it together.
