A wife and mother of two follows her husband along Europe's roads and through its cities. He is powerful, selfish, self-assured and good at making money, but wanted on an unpublished political warrant, so the family can never settle. She longs to give the children a safe home, to write and to find her own voice, yet she is held back by the patriarchal marriage she once accepted. Told in the first person but through many voices, moving between family chronicle and autofiction, the novel follows her slow revolt against her husband's dominance as she sets off on a road of her own. It is also a book about emigrants from the countries of the post-communist transition, about exile, motherhood and class, and about longing for an abandoned home.
