Jacob Leibowicz Frank appears in a world of loss, want and decline and proclaims himself the Messiah. Several thousand Podolian Jews follow him, accept baptism and form the Frankist sect, which rejects the law of Moses and the Talmud. The novel follows their wandering through the eighteenth-century Commonwealth in search of a place of their own, and those who view them with suspicion, such as the castellan's wife Kossakowska.
