The novel covers the lives of three generations, from the autumn of 1943 to the spring of 2004: the fighting of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army under Stalin, the generation of the 1960s, perestroika, the troubled 1990s and independence. Its title comes from a children's game in which girls bury little treasures under glass, a game the author traces back to great-grandmothers who hid icons from the Bolsheviks, and to the insurgents' archives sealed in milk cans. Family histories lie buried in the same way, and people walk over this museum without knowing it is there. It is a novel about the choice each generation has to make, and about strong women.
