Hokwerda's kind

Lin's father adores his frail little girl and toughens her by hurling her over the reeds into a deep Frisian river, a game that one evening almost kills her and marks her for life. After losing him she leaves Friesland for Amsterdam and gives herself to table tennis, until she walks away from the sport. Three lovers follow, and one of them, the welder Henri Kist, exerts the same perilous pull as her father.
