Under the dictatorship in Chile, a man in torment walks into the newsroom of a magazine that opposes the regime. He belongs to the secret services and wants to confess, so a reporter starts recording. Taking this true episode as her point of departure, the narrator, a writer who weighs the torturer's words against what she herself lived through, lets invention carry her into places neither recollection nor the files can reach. She imagines the people his confession names, such as a man seized from a city bus as he accompanied his kids to class, or a child forced to take on one identity after another until he sees a massacre.
