Days after a literary festival abroad has ended, an Israeli novelist comes to in his hotel room, his clothes stiff with mud, with no idea how long he has been lying there. Retracing the lost time through the people he spoke to, he finds out he announced to them that Yoel, his oldest friend, was dead, though Yoel is still living. Back home a wife and small boy expect him; Yoel, a high-flying lawyer, has walked out of his firm, returned to his childhood room and vowed not to survive another summer, and there may still be time to stop him. The book shifts between their shared boyhood in 1980s Jerusalem, a final school year in which the narrator was held responsible for his mother's fatal illness, and the present.
