Bakar, on the Croatian coast, during the Second World War. One night a young woman, Jelena, is taken away and interned at Gonars, a fascist camp in Italy, leaving behind her husband Nikola Luzer and their four-year-old daughter Jasna. Built on the author's grandfather's notes and on the story of his grandmother, who was arrested for carrying medicine to the partisans, the novel asks what she lived through in the camp, how her husband and child got by without her, and whether the camp ever let go of her. From that core it widens, through shifting points of view and in Shtokavian, Chakavian and Italian, into a chronicle of the whole occupied town, at times grotesque and comic, in which Bakar itself becomes the main character.
