This Motherless Land

Funke is happy in Nigeria with her mother, an art teacher, her father, a professor, and her little brother. When tragedy strikes, she is sent to her mother's family in Somerset, an estate she knows only from her mother's stories, and finds it run-down, the food bland, the weather grey and her relatives cold. Only her cousin Liv, who longs to escape the family herself, welcomes her, and the two grow up the closest of friends. But the choices their mothers made cast a long shadow, and a second tragedy drives the cousins apart. Moving between Somerset and Lagos over two decades, the story follows each woman's search for belonging.
