Chester Farlowe's father was shot dead by the cowardly Stronson when Chester was a boy of twelve, out on the great cattle stations of New Zealand's central Volcanic Plateau. Chester fled to the lawless streets of Auckland, where Henry Stroud, owner of the I Fry takeaway wagon, gave him a home and a new name, Mr Dog, and where he met a girl called Spoons. Six years later the anger he had buried has come back. He straps on his guns and heads for the country under the striding pylons, where Stronson is waiting. Before the final reckoning he has to get past Boss Lennox, Cook, the Sultation Kid and the alluring, unreadable Miss Peet. In Chester's own voice, the myths of the Western play out in Ponsonby and the North Island hills.
