In Berlin in November 2021, Neon, a middle-aged narrator, is starting a new life abroad with his family and trying to make his life whole by writing it. The story goes back to his childhood in Senj with a grandfather, a Second World War veteran with PTSD who waits for aliens, a grandmother who is the voice of reason but fears her imaginative grandson's brain will explode, and the dog Sokol. Then come school, the army and the war, institutions that cause him trouble, and a crowd of friends, teachers, neighbours and town eccentrics, in episodes that make him a coward or a hero, sometimes both at once. When reality presses too hard, Neon travels in his head along the paths of the Uskoks, comic-book heroes or Castaneda's Don Juan.
