Young Enis Selmanić runs away from Zagreb after being blamed for a fire in the café where he worked. His sister Sanda wants out of the Roma ghetto, and their father Fabo has been cast out of his own world without being accepted in the other. Told in four storylines, largely from inside the Roma community, the novel follows people trying to escape poverty, rejection and stigma, in a community whose traditional values and codes of behaviour are falling apart while it cannot find its way in new ones. Around them hatred of Roma is becoming ever more acceptable, and questions of guilt, justice, stereotypes and integration press on the characters and on the reader, who picks up words of their language along the way.
