The novel follows the inner voice of a first-person narrator, a writer haunted by her lover Ana, who "laughed her way past and never really left again", and by the memory of their relationship. Both women are artists of the word, both marked by traumatic experiences, both torn between a great need to belong and to be loved and an even greater need for freedom, peace and silence. Feeling that they can live their intimacy only among their own kind, they build a world of their own in a small wooden house in an unspoiled corner of Croatian Istria, where neighbours, threatened by the strangers, sometimes gossip. Then ever more frightening night sounds begin to intrude, and it is never clear whether they come from outside or from the narrator's obsession, as a picnic draws near.
