Tokunaga is a young comedian going nowhere, one half of the duo Sparks with Yamashita, whom he has known since their schooldays. One night in Atami, while fireworks go up, he runs into Kamiya of the duo Ahondara and begs to be taken on as his disciple. Kamiya says yes on one condition: Tokunaga must write his biography. Kamiya is a born original with strange ideas and real warmth, yet other comics avoid him, as they do his short-fused partner Ōbayashi, a former local tough. Tokunaga follows him everywhere and falls ever further under his spell, while Kamiya opens up and sets out to pass on his whole thinking about laughter. Their debates about what comedy is never let up. Kamiya lives with a woman, Maki, though he denies she is his girlfriend.
