Young people leave home for Delhi, Mumbai and the other big cities in search of careers. When the global economic crisis reaches India, many of them are out of work overnight, and the novel follows their hardship and growing desperation in Delhi. Through them it looks at globalisation at the turn of the twenty-first century, and at ordinary people who meet injustice while trying to build a decent life.
