Mariia Vasylivna, a retired biology teacher of seventy-one, sums up her life and justifies its worth by the great love it contained, even if long ago. That love, and every other fact of her life with it, becomes doubtful when she discovers a false bottom in the wardrobe of her late husband, a lieutenant colonel. Her memories take in a club of young atheists and an inquiry into a reported appearance of the Virgin Mary, two dead people and countless animals preserved in formalin, a part in a musical film with a popular singer, and a search for understanding with those closest to her. It is an attempt to finish her affairs with dignity, knowing that nothing can be put right any more.
