Yahya is a single young man who lives with his mother in an old flat after his father's death. He works for a company that sells cheap Chinese goods door to door, one of an army of unemployed graduates who sign blank promissory notes before setting out with their bags. One day Rana, the girl he used to tutor in mathematics, comes to see him, makes love to him and leaves her torn blouse behind, taking his shirt. She had already died. The visit unsettles his whole life, and the novel keeps the tension between it and his everyday routine.
