Andreja Kereba, a Belgrade painter and restorer, once a bohemian and an anarchist, learns that the father who disinherited him has died, and goes to a small town in the central Banat for the funeral. The burial is put off twice and never takes place in the course of the novel. Around these failed funerals and a memorial gathering, in 1999 while the Kosovo war escalates and his brother is at the front, Andreja faces small-town mentality, a family history without a mother, his father's tyranny and a string of bitter memories. In loose associations the story reaches back through the twentieth century, from the German occupation onward, so that personal and national tragedy mirror each other.
