Serena's mother walks out on her birthday. Her father, a fragile man, brings home a Brazilian woman, Bella, but she does not stay, and soon it is just the two of them, until he begins to abuse his daughter and the real world offers her nowhere left to hide. At eleven, in the small hours of 2 September 1993, Serena catches sight of Rian on television, the long-dead singer of a British band called the cups, and falls for him. A fat biography tells her that his early years were, in his words, a dark age of their own. Looking back over her life from childhood on, the story keeps breaking off into her daydreams of romance with him, sometimes funny, and into passages from the biography, until it grows hard to tell what is real.
