The journalist Erik Tlomm takes sick leave and withdraws into nature, to the empty house of his wife's grandparents in Medsočje, a beautiful imaginary village on the Soča river. Soon after he arrives, a crime is committed: on a stormy night someone murders Magdalena, the mayor's young daughter, and hangs her body on the linden tree on the main square, the same tree that lightning splits that very night. His self-prescribed retreat turns into a murder investigation and a hunt for the killer in the depths of Medsočje, a place where hunters and fishermen, Reds and the devout, art and gambling, knitting and crochet, carnal orgies and the spiritual heritage of the old believers live side by side. The story mixes crime novel, diary, love story, newspaper articles, graffiti, dream records and the author's notes in the margins.
