Belgrade in the early eighteenth century is under brief Austrian rule, a town of ramparts, secret passages and new cathedrals. Into it comes Count von Hausburg, who seduces Princess Maria Augusta of Thurn und Taxis, spies on her husband the regent and asks discreetly about the vampires said to be roaming the countryside. The princess is less naive than she seems, the regent has something to hide, the vampires appear to be real, and the count is the devil himself. Lucifer tells his version of events, and years later, during an investigation, the princess has to tell hers; the two accounts do not agree. Mixing history, folklore and the fantastic, the novel is a political horror story with a light, ironic touch.
