Like a photographic film being developed, the novel tells another story of the twentieth century through the fates of women connected in various ways by photography. Their lives break along with the century: from the seeming peace of Paris up to the early 1930s, across the killing fields of the Spanish Civil War, the Second World War and the war in Vietnam, the revolt of 1968 and the Middle East, to the Yugoslav tragedy and Sarajevo in the 1990s. Real names appear, such as Berenice Abbott, Robert Capa, Aragon, Susan Sontag and Henri Cartier-Bresson, but they are only a pretext for a dense journey through the century, the history of the artistic avant-garde and the intimate lives of the women and men in it.
