Kotone is thirty-two. A year ago she left her company job, and now she gets by giving piano lessons to children, unable to cover her rent without her parents, while her boyfriend drifts away. Over two days at Christmas, things go from bad to worse. Kobayashi, an old school friend who teases her mercilessly on the phone, hands her an Eve gig as accompanist to an older singer, keeps a cut for herself, and turns Kotone's humiliation into an anecdote. Kotone is no saint: sweet to people's faces, she runs them down the moment they leave. Then she sees Yu again, who has looked out for her since their early teens, and whose warm family and gentle kindness Kotone finds unbearable. The narration stays outside her head and lets her talk give her away.
