On 10 November 1942 a young man is brought, in a sorry state, into the German gendarmerie post at Gornji Grad. His name, Samo Knez, means nothing to the sleepy officers, until with one gesture he shows them papers from the highest Nazi security offices, and suddenly a hotel room and every privilege are his. How does a Slovene patriot, not much of a hero by nature, come to know such powerful Nazis? Answering that question, the story turns back to Ljubljana before the occupation, which the young man seems to have witnessed in every detail, from jazz evenings and literary readings to the ski-jumping records at Planica, and follows him all the way to wartime Vienna.
