Three generations of women are touched, indirectly but deeply, by the history of the late twentieth century. Květa never grows close to her husband, whose view of the world was shaped forever by a concentration camp, nor to her daughter Hana, a young photographer who escapes to London through a fictitious marriage for fear of persecution. There Hana lives through the hard beginnings of exile in complete isolation, betrayed by her partner and cut off from the child she left with her mother in Prague. Her London notes, her mother's view and a box of photographs make up the story, which ends with the adult daughter Erika's difficult approach to a mother she never knew.
