Mr Katō has just retired and lives with his wife in Japan. With no work, his feelings have nothing to attach to, and he drifts away from his children and his wife. His projects, reorganising his record collection, buying a dog, a trip to Paris, come to nothing, and his wife suffers from what is called retired husband syndrome. Then Mr Katō begins working for an agency called Happy Family, which books him as a stand-in for relatives who are absent in real life. The role play, between comedy and existential seriousness, blurs the lines between real life, lies and dreams.
