On the eve of her wedding, a young woman tries to reconstruct the singular life of her grandmother, a passionate woman whose sunny temperament clashed with a backward society that thought her mad, and whose mother beat her to teach her how to behave. She married late, when she had stopped hoping, to a widowed evacuee who asked for her hand, and their married life began badly, the couple sleeping back to back without speaking. Then, at a spa where she was sent to cure her kidney stones, the 'mal di pietre', she met by chance a man maimed in the war, and fell in love with him: the great love of her life.
