In sixteenth-century Seville, Doctor Nicolás Monardes, whose writings helped introduce tobacco to Europe, declares the plant recently found in the New World a herba panacea that heals every ill of body and mind. His Portuguese assistant Da Silva, a scheming, ever-blundering rogue, recounts how the pair set out to treat thirty-six diseases with it, by poultices, pipes and odder means, at one point smoking a poltergeist out of a church. Their tragicomic mishaps build into a dark picaresque about money, quackery and human credulity, in which tobacco comes to stand for modernity and the things it believes in.
