Възвишение

In the age of the Bulgarian National Revival, Asencho and Gicho, two rebels and friends of the revolutionary Dimitar Obshti, half fighters for freedom and half highwaymen, take part in the Arabakonak robbery, the start of their many misadventures. Little by little they are drawn into every kind of secret work, conspiratorial, expeditionary and revolutionary-cum-bandit. The story is told in a lively imitation of the Bulgarian of the 1870s, through which inns, a French engineer surveying a railway, and the friends' arguments about why Bulgarians keep failing all look comic and charming. The novel paints the heroes without halos: some weak, some strong only for their own gain.
