Josip Majdak, a retired watchmaker, falls gravely ill and begins to come to terms with the end of his life. He spent half his life repairing clocks yet never noticed the ticking of the world, not until death threatened. The title names the balance wheel, the small part that keeps a clock running true, and his heartbeats now sound like a watch counting down. His conscience brings back everyone he hurt or long forgot, the moments when he was selfish, lying, unfaithful or excessive, as he looks back on a life he feels he wasted. A man some would simply call a bastard has to face his debts to others and to himself, and the hardest act of all: asking for forgiveness.
