In the late 19th century, as the colonisation of Africa gets under way, a utopia is founded in the heart of the continent, in the lands where the sources of the Nile had been sought for centuries. A company of Europeans, Egyptians and Sudanese, led by the naturalist, doctor and explorer Eduard Schnitzer, known as Emin Pasha, is cut off from the world as a jihadist revolt rages in Sudan, and slowly builds a new society in the Great Lakes region called Equatoria, until Europe decides to rescue its children. The narrator, an Alexandrian cotton merchant settled in Zanzibar, lives through the birth of the utopia, travels to Equatoria and helps govern its unexplored lands.
