In 1995 an ambitious project begins on the wide strait between Denmark and Sweden: the Øresund link, which within five years must build an undersea tunnel, an artificial island and a cable-stayed bridge to join prosperous Copenhagen with neglected Malmö by road and rail, and serve as a model of efficiency for all of Europe. For the Danish government the work is supervised by Dan Kristofte, for the Swedish by Sven Alexandersson. Until 2000 the well-meaning Dane and the cynical Swede watch the works advance and get tangled in paradoxical situations, in a political, economic, technological, romantic and comic thriller about human ingenuity, responsibility, globalisation and friendship.
