The unnamed narrator has left Britain and a four-year relationship behind and come to Berlin with nine other Britons, hired through an agency to perform a play for children from orphanages. There she meets Ole, a small, provocative Berliner in a red top hat and heeled shoes, two years her junior, for whom everything, love included, is a game; Ole calls her Prinzessin. Over the weeks from autumn to winter 2010 the story moves through laughter, quarrels, moves and reconciliations, interwoven with fragments of her childhood memories and her reflections on Ole's strange habits and moods. Their relationship, too intense and yet hollow, leads her to think about her own lack of roots and what home means.
