The Kocsis family lives in Switzerland but does not feel at home there. They come from the Hungarian minority in Vojvodina, in northern Serbia. The father emigrated first, and as soon as it was allowed, the mother followed with the two daughters, Nomi and Ildiko. Told by Ildiko, first with a child's eyes and later as a young woman who notices the cracks between very different worlds, the family builds a life in Swiss catering. What begins as a light-hearted Balkan comedy, with summer trips back home in a rattling brown Chevrolet, is soon overshadowed by history and the coming Yugoslav wars.
