Ever since she first read Andersen's tale, Masago has known how the mermaid feels: a girl who should have been human, born into the wrong body. At high school she and four friends from the theatre club rework the story into their own play for the school festival, arguing over what it means, and Masago, a trans girl, gets the title role. In their script the land is ruled by borders that people dare not step over, unlike the open sea. When the Covid years are over, about three years on, the group meets again to stage the play once more with pupils at their old school. Masago now goes by another name and tells them she has stopped trying to be a girl.
