Alice Ferry, a mycologist, has retired in Wellington. One day Adrian turns up on her doorstep and says he is her brother Gordon's grandson, a relative whose existence she had never suspected. Alice and Gordon grew up close in West Auckland, but their lives went separate ways. She built a successful career; he has sunk into silence and now lives as a derelict on Wellington's streets. Adrian wants to meet his grandfather, and Alice tries to stop him. As she tells the story of their childhood and of how the two of them came apart, she grows ever more on edge, and the reader starts to wonder what she is hiding and what she had to do with her brother's state.
