Tosca

May Solovjov, forty-three, translates and teaches applied linguistics. A troubling note from a girl of seventeen, Aline Verstraeten, reaches her after a public talk, and in a lengthy letter to her editor May accounts for the year she then devoted to the girl instead of her own work. Aline is in deep trouble, rarely says a word and appears to welcome the thought of dying soon. The more May tries to grasp and even rescue her, the tighter the two are bound in an unhealthy tie, in a book where poems keep breaking into the prose.
